"Brother Against Brother: The English Civil War" Overview

"We shall cut off the King¹s head with the crown upon it" Oliver Cromwell

It was a time of bitterness and hatred ‹ a war which set father against son, brother against brother; in a bloody battle, it was winner take all. After seven years of turmoil, even the dramatic execution of King Charles I could not bring peace - more bloodshed was to follow.

The most tragic and dramatic chapter in English history is recorded in detail in this informative and entertaining DVD. It features superb battle re-enactments and reconstructions, dramatized eyewitness accounts and period imagery to chronicle the course of events, the major personalities and the battles of the war. The program also combines 3D computer mapping techniques and expert analyses to provide a unique flavor of the period. This DVD provides an in-depth look into the turbulent era of the English Civil War.

Titles in this series include:

THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, D7128 THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, D7129 THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR.

"Brother Against Brother: The English Civil War" Specifications

This hourlong documentary on the American Civil War covers a lot of ground in a short time yet manages to provide some content not always found in other treatments of the subject. The fact that this is a British production injects a different perspective, and topics such as the roots of the war first emerging in British-ruled colonial America, the role of immigrants in the armed forces, and especially lessons learned (or tragically ignored) from European wars, are covered in an intelligent fashion. At times an English actor appears as the character of a recent immigrant who served in the Union army. Less effectively, the informative narrative about major battles is at times accompanied by clips from vintage silent films portraying battlefield action. This documentary does generally accomplish what it sets out to do, and provides a reasonably concise introduction to the American Civil War. --Robert J. McNamara
